GEOCHEMISTRY AND ROCK MAGNETIC ANALYSIS ON SURFACE SEDIMENT IN LAMPENISU RIVER: A QUEST FOR MG SOURCE TO LAKE TOWUTI, INDONESIA

چکیده

Sediment from Lake Towuti has been extensively studied to reconstruct past climate and environmental changes. One of the remaining questions is source magnesium (Mg) calcium (Ca) in northern part Towuti. In this study, high Mg Ca content examined by analysing surface sediment Lampenisu River (LR) Mahalona (MR) that merge before entering Twelve sediments MR, LR, confluence two rivers (LMR) were subjected geochemical (XRF), mineralogical (XRD), rock magnetic (susceptibility hysteresis parameter) analyses. The result shows LR samples are higher than MR samples. have a susceptibility lower frequency dependent XRD analyses on extracted grains show presence minerals with sodalite crystal structure, possibly valleyite but not If indeed occurs samples, it may contribute their relatively content. At same time, likely due serpentinized peridotite rocks. thereby considered be portion This study importance sediment-source identification big lakes such as Towuti, where influx could come several around lake.

Paleolake Deposits on Mars: Perspectives on Source-to-sink Mineralogy from Lake Towuti, Indonesia

Introduction: Ancient paleolake basins are amongst the best evidence for surface fluvial activity early in martian history [e.g., 1-3]. Many of these paleolakes contain sedimentary deposits formed when there was standing water within the basin [e.g., 1,2,4]. Study of lacustrine sedimentary deposits on Earth can provide fundamental constraints on martian paleolake deposits, which are largely res...

Characterizing clay mineralogy in Lake Towuti, Indonesia, with reflectance spectroscopy

We tested the use of visible to near-infrared (VNIR) reflectance spectroscopy to characterize the relative abundances of clay minerals in sediments from Lake Towuti, a large tectonic lake in Sulawesi, Indonesia. We measured VNIR spectra of lake and river sediments from Lake Towuti and its catchment to identify clay minerals, fit major VNIR absorption features with a modified Gaussian model to e...

Geomicrobiological Features of Ferruginous Sediments from Lake Towuti, Indonesia

Lake Towuti is a tectonic basin, surrounded by ultramafic rocks. Lateritic soils form through weathering and deliver abundant iron (oxy)hydroxides but very little sulfate to the lake and its sediment. To characterize the sediment biogeochemistry, we collected cores at three sites with increasing water depth and decreasing bottom water oxygen concentrations. Microbial cell densities were highest...

A 40,000 yr record of clay mineralogy at Lake Towuti, Indonesia: Paleoclimate reconstruction from reflectance spectroscopy and perspectives on paleolakes on Mars

Sediment deposited within lake basins can preserve detailed records of past environmental conditions on planetary surfaces, including both Earth and Mars. Establishing how to best characterize these paleoclimate records is thus critical for understanding the evolution of past planetary climates. Here, we present an ~40 k.y. lake sediment record from Lake Towuti, Indonesia, developed using visib...

Sediment and rock strength controls on river incision into bedrock

Recent theoretical investigations suggest that the rate of river incision into bedrock depends nonlinearly on sediment supply, challenging the common assumption that incision rate is simply proportional to stream power. Our measurements from laboratory abrasion mills support the hypothesis that sediment promotes erosion at low supply rates by providing tools for abrasion, but inhibits erosion a...
